AARP recently released an article detailing five scams to look out for in 2026.

Many modern scams involve inducing people to divulge personal information. Sometimes this involves scammers claiming to offer a job opportunity or pretending that the potential victim is owed money.

Some scams start by sending what appears to a text sent to the wrong number hoping to start a conversation that eventually evolves into a scam. A similar scam involves interacting with someone on a dating site who strings the potential victim along until a request is made.

Scammers will also pose as law enforcement or a government agency and threaten some sort of action. Another scam involves a fake claim that the victim’s device has been hacked and threatening to divulge embarrassing information unless the victim pays up.

General tips to stay safe involves keeping in mind that government agencies and police departments will never call people and threaten legal action. Additionally, beware anytime when someone claims that payment is necessary immediately to avoid negative consequences.
